Special Class Activities
SPECIAL HELPER OF THE DAY
Each child will have an opportunity to be the special helper of the day. I will write their names on the board with the date that will be their turn. The children look forward to this and learn to read each other’s names and the dates. If a child is absent I will just move down to the next child on the list and when the other child returns to school it will be their turn. The duties of the special helper of the day are to: do calendar time (which has many components), introduce the letters of the week and the site word of the week. Your child will be very excited and will want to tell you all about it when they get home from school.
MYSTERY BAG
Beginning with the third week of class, one child a week will get to take the mystery bag home. The child is to select a special item of their choice and have a parent help write down three clues to what is in the bag. The other children will have an opportunity to guess the item. They will also get to fill out a “star of the day” poster about themselves that will be hung in the classroom. I will be starting with the end of the alphabet since the special helper of the day will start at the beginning of the alphabet.
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
Every child wants to celebrate their birthday in school. It’s so much fun picking out what to bring. Birthday treats do NOT have to follow the healthy snack rule. Once school starts I will notify you of any allergy alerts that will have to be considered on these treat days. You are welcome to come into class for your child’s birthday and help pass out the treats. When your child’s birthday is near, please contact me to set up a day for your child to bring in their treat.
Make sure the treats are ready for individual portions. (Please no whole cakes!) You will also need to provide the plates, napkins and plastic ware that might be necessary. The last 15 minutes of class will be reserved for the birthday celebration. We do not have refrigeration space available so if you are sending it in with your child make sure it is safe at room temperature. For summer birthday’s we will celebrate them at the end of the school year.
