What's Going On
in our classroom
BEHAVIOR SYSTEM
I use a system called “We Show Great Bee-havior! The children will each be assigned a magnetic bee with their name on it. Each day they will place it on the green bee hive. This will also serve as my quick attendance check. The goal is to stay on the green bee hive. Should a child have a difficult day showing inappropriate behavior (after several warnings) they will have to move their bee to the yellow bee hive, and then to the red bee hive if poor behavior persists. I do not anticipate the bees moving much.
CENTERS
Beginning the third week of school the children began learning centers. They will cover six centers in a two-week period. Centers will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The children will be assigned to one each day. I like to use creative names for my centers.
Express Yourself (art)
I Wonder (science)
Numberlicious (math)
Tech-Know (computers) -- During center time, we will also practice logging on and off. Here students will get experience working with Word and using several of the learning software programs Chippewa Valley Schools provide. I will need parent volunteers in the computer lab weekly once we start going to the lab.
Build-It (blocks) or Game On (games, puzzles, manipulative)
Write On (writing)
Acting Up (dramatic play)
Book Worm (reading) -- Here children will have individual reading time with me. I will assign several books for the children to take home and have someone read to them. When they are ready they will read the books to you. I will see them as often as I can to assess their reading progress.
Evaluations
I will have a center called “I Know Zone” where I can work with children individually or in small groups so they can show me what they “know.” I feel this is a much more positive way of looking at assessments and will not make the children as nervous.
SPECIALS
The "specials" (gym, music, science and art) each have a day of the week assigned to our schedule. On that day, your Kindergarten student will spend some time in a different classroom with the specials teacher of that day.
For the 2011-12 Academic Year the specials schedule was:
Monday -- Gym (please make sure child wears gym shoes this day), Library
Tues -- Music
Weds -- Rotates
Thurs -- Science
Fri -- Art
LIBRARY
We will visit our school library on Monday each week. Your child will be allowed to check out one book per visit. They will need to return the book by the following week on their library day in order to check out a new book. Your child may return it to our library crate any day prior to library day.
